Mais de três milhões de Km2. 960 200 000 habitantes. Mais de 80% de hindus. Vinte e cinco Estados, um dos quais, Goa, com 3 702 km2 e 1 169 000 habitantes. Independente desde 15 de Agosto de 1947, depois de uma longa luta pela liberdade, levada a cabo pelo Congresso Nacional Indiano, fundado em 1885.
Jawaharal Nehru (1889-1964) governa de 1947 até à morte. A filha, Indira Gandhi (1917-1984) governa em 1966-1967 e em 1980-1984.
